Rheumatoid Arthritis

Information, Symptoms, Causes and Cures

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease of the joints. It attacks the synovial tissue, the membrane that lines the joints and provides the lubricant that allows joints to move easily. It affects more than 2 million people in the US and can be one of the more disabling forms of arthritis. RA can occur at any age and affects women about three times more than than men. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a long term illness where the muscle and membrane linings of the joints and cartilage deteriorate.

What causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?

No one knows for sure but most researchers and medical scientists agree that the inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis appears to be due to a disorder in the body’s immune system. The body’s own immune system begins to attack the delicate lining of certain joints. The tissue becomes swollen, hot and painful making the joint stiff and difficult to move. In severe cases, the swollen and deformed joints may become partly or completely dislocated, causing considerable discomfort and problems with walking if the knee or foot joints are affected. The tendons can sometime become so weak that they can break.

What are the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis will vary from person to person and from day to day but the common warning signs are:

· Morning stiffness

· stiffness, swelling and tenderness of the joints most often in the wrist, hands and feet

· Pain, redness and warmth in a joint

· Fatigue, loss of appetite and weakness often with a fever

Chronic inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis can cause damage to body tissues, cartilage and bone. This leads to a loss of cartilage and erosion and weakness of the bones as well as the muscles, resulting in deformed joints and loss of function.
The inflammation brought on by RA can also affect organs and areas of the body other than the joints such as the the glands of the eyes and mouth, the lungs, and heart. It causes anemia in some cases, increasing the the risk of infections. Rheumatoid nodules (firm lumps) can also develop around the elbows and fingers where there is frequent pressure.

Cures and Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

There is no known cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Many researchers however, are of the opinion that diet and lifestyle plays a big role in the treatment and possible prevention of Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Recent research has shown a link between diet and Lifestyle and chronic disease including Rheumatoid Arthritis.  In populations who have a more natural diet and lifestyle chronic degenerative diseases are rare when compared to the North American Population.

Do nutritional supplements work to lessen the swelling and pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

We do know that the most commonly observed vitamin and mineral deficiencies in patients with RA, are folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc and selenium (ref1). Although nutrionists agree that food is always the preferred source for vitamins and minerals, it may be essential to use a supplement to help in replacing the outlined deficiencies to improve the nutritional status for patients with RA. Research has also shown that antioxidants such as selenium and vitamin E may decrease free-radical damage to the joint linings, which help with swelling and pain. For a Complete compliment of Arthritis products see  Supplements for Joint and Bone Healthimage

What about Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate?

Studies have proved it. Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate, along with specific antioxidant vitamins and minerals mentioned above can actually stabilize and even reverse the progression of joint and cartilage deterioration. Research has also shown that when a glucosamine deficiency is corrected, the body replenishes its ability to replace worn-out joint cells and tissues.

Exercise and Lifestyle Modification benefit Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Daily exercise is used an as effective treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Staying active on a daily basis will preserve strength and mobility of the joints. A nourishing and well-balanced diet including ample fiber will also promote good overall health and a sense of well being.
