Natural Vitamin E more effective than it’s Synthetic Form

Many health professionals feel that a mixed Natural form of Vitamin E be taken as this is howVitamin E is found naturally in food.

Research has shown that natural Vitamin E, milligram for milligram, is about 3x more potent than the synthetic form of Vitamin E.

What is Natural Vitamin E

Vitamin E refers to a family of eight related, fat-soluble, antioxidant compounds widely distributed in plants. The tocopherol and tocotrienol subfamilies are each composed of alpha, beta, gamma and delta, and all possess unique biological effects. Different ratios of these compounds are found in different parts of a plant. For example, the green parts of a plant contain mostly alpha tocopherol and the seed germ and bran contain mostly tocotrienols.
Most over the counter Vitamin E supplements contain only the Alpha form of vitamin E. However, it is suggested by many health professionals that a mixed Natural form of Vitamin E be taken as this is how Vitamin E is found naturally in food.

Natural Vs. Synthetic

Unlike other vitamins, the Synthetic form of Vitamin E is not identical to the natural form of Vitamin E. The natural form is shown as D-alpha, D-beta etc, as compared to the synthetic form which  is shown as DL-alpha. The synthetic form of Vitamin E is only produced in the Alpha form.

Research conducted at the National Research Council of Canada has shown that the natural form is 2 times as bioavailable as the synthetic form. Other studies have shown similar results.

Natural doesn’t mean much when it comes to vitamins, with vitamin E probably the only exception…. -The New York Times, February 3, 1993

Vitamin E Benefits – Powerful Antioxidant

Most of the benefits of Vitamin E, stem from its role as a powerful antioxidant. In addition there is growing evidence that part of Vitamin E effectiveness comes from its ability to work with other Vitamins.  It may be that Vitamin E protects Vitamin A, C, and other vitamins from oxidation thus prolonging there effectiveness.

Natural vitamin E is an essential vitamin in which helps boost the immune system, and promotes healthy cardiovascular function. It is also beneficial in the maintenance of healthy brain cells, and aids in most aspects of a healthy body.

Clinical research has shown positive benefits of vitamin E in disease states such as Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, Heart disease,  prostate cancer among others. Ongoing research suggests that the complete family of natural vitamin E (mixed tocopherols and mixed tocotrienols) may provide benefits in many other ageing and chronic diseases.

Vitamin E – Food & Supplements

The recommended US daily allowance (RDA) of Vitamin E is 8-10 milligrams per day. The good news is most people get this amount of vitamin E in there daily diet. However, professionals in the nutrition field believe that to get the maximum benefits, amounts in excess of 200 mg per day of Vitamin E should be taken.

A survey commissioned by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) found that among cardiologists, 75% recommended Vitamin E to there patients. The most common dosage was 400 IU. It was also reported that 48% of cardiologists took Vitamin E personally.
