Lycopene – Treatment for the Prostate

Lycopene

Prevention and Treatment for of Prostate disease

Lycopene – A carotenoid nutrient found in tomatoes (and everything made from them) has been extensively studied for its antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties. Most other food phytonutrients,  have only been studied in animals, lycopene from tomatoes has been repeatedly studied in humans and found to be protective against a growing list of cancers. These cancers now include prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancers.

Risk of Prostate Cancer increase Rapidly after 40

The risk of a man having prostate cancer increases with age. The baby boomers are now  approaching the age for getting prostate cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, this year almost 200,000 men in the united States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 40,000 will die from this disease.  The combined awareness of prostate cancer and research suggesting prostate cancer can be prevented has resulted in a wave of health supplements including lycopene

The scientific research is mounting that diet and lifestyle can prevent Prostate problems including cancer. In populations, who consume a Mediterranean diet which is high in tomatoes and tomato bases products have a reduced risk of cancer.

Tomatoes contain lycopene a substance which is responsible for the their red color.  Other foods such as Guava, watermelon, rose hips and pink grapefruit also contain lycopene but in lower concentrations than the tomato. Research has shown that a higher intake of tomatoes or higher blood levels of lycopene correlated with a reduced risk of cancer.  Lycopene is a powerful Antioxidant which appears to concentrate in the prostate area more so than in other parts of the body. This it is suggested makes lycopene an ideal supplement to prevent prostate problems.

Getting Lycopene

Lycopene is not always easily absorbed by the body.  It is best absorbed in  the presence of fat.  To get the full benefit of lycopene your body must be able to absorb it. The Mediterranean diet using liberal amount of olive oil enhances the bodies ability to use lycopene effectively.  It is therefore suggested when either consuming lycopene in tomato based products or a lycopene supplement you insure it is in the presence of fat.  To improve the absorption of lycopene mix a healthy oil such as olive oil or flax oil with you tomato dishes after cooking.

Lycopene Supplements

“When selecting a lycopene supplement, it is critically important it be of the highest quality. If thelycopeneis not “standardized” you may be getting only a fraction of the active ingredient. The Lyc-O-Mato® brand is an all natural extract made from red, ripe tomatoes. Lyc-O-Mato production is closely supervised to assure a high quality, standardized product. Many of the studies showing benefit have used the Lyc-O-Mato brand and there are studies proving superior increases in blood lycopene levels with this brand of extract. In some cases, tomatoes or tomato-based products may not contain high enough levels of lycopene. If you are not getting enough lycopene from tomatoes or foods that contain tomatoes, then supplementation is key to increasing your blood lycopene levels.” – says Allen S. Josephs, M.D

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant carotenoid which is the source of the red coloring of tomatoes. Lycopene has been shown to have major protective effects throughout the body including reducing the risk of prostate cancer, prevent LDL cholesterol from being oxidized and reducing the risk of macular degeneration. Research has found that standardized lycopene in the Lyco-O-Mato form is  much better absorbed and powerful antioxidant when compared to all others including raw tomatoes.
