Stir Fry Low Carb Foods using a Wok

Using the wok to prepare nutritious and healthy low carb meals is not as difficult as it appears. Being prepared and using the right equipment are the keys to success when preparing a low carb dish using a wok. Try using a traditional steel wok. They’re usually less expensive and work much better for low carb cooking than an electric wok, for example. Your wok should be “seasoned” before being used. Spread a thin layer of oil on the wok’s cooking surface and heat on medium-high for 5 to 10 minutes. The oil adheres to the metal providing you with a non-stick surface. After your wok is seasoned, the best way to keep your low carb foods from sticking is to heat it first and then add oil. If you add oil to a cold wok and then heat it, your food may stick and make scrubbing it eat an unnecessary chore. Cleaning your steel wok , if it has been properly used and seasoned, is a breeze. Just use a little soap and warm water and rinse clean. You should always reapply a thin coating of oil after each used but you won’t need to season it again until after many uses.

Beef strips with Bok Choy, Broccoli and Oyster Sauce

This is a delicious low carb meal that can be served with a little brown rice and a fresh garden salad. It’s nutritious and easy to prepare.


Half pound top sirloin steak
2 cups of broccoli
2 cups bok choy
1 cup bean sprouts
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice wine or white wine
Juice from half a lime
2 tsp grated ginger
2 cloves garlic sliced
1 large onion diced in chunks
3 Tablespoons peanut oil
1 teaspoon garlic chili sauce (available from Asian food stores) 
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon water

Slice the sirloin into very thin strips and then marinate for one half hour using light soy sauce, rice wine or white wine and lime juice. Stir fry onion, garlic, ginger, bok choy, and broccoli in the peanut oil until tender (about 2 to 3 minutes). Add beef strips including the marinade, along with the oyster sauce, chili garlic sauce and bean sprouts and stir fry for another 3 minutes. Mix cornstarch with water and add it to the stir fry. Let it thicken and then serve.

For this low carb recipe, it’s important to look for a good quality oyster sauce with oyster extractives as the number one ingredient. Avoid oyster flavored sauces. They’re primarily water and sugar.
