Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acid Ratio
May be the Key to Understanding Fat and Chronic Disease.
According to Professor Andrew Sinclair and Professor Artemis Simopoulos, achieving the correct ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids helps the body to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, prevent irregular heart beats and promote healthy blood flow.
Evidence is mounting that it is not the kind of fat eaten (monosaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated) but is the fatty acid make-up of these fats. More specifically, polyunsaturated and the ratio of omega-6 polyunsaturated and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Eskimos and Low Incidence of Heart Disease.
You would think that with the common belief that fats are a major cause of heart disease there would be over whelming evidence to support this theory. This is not the case. This can be best demonstrated by the fact that Eskimos on a traditional diet high in fat have little or no heart disease. While their traditional diet is high in saturated fat it is mostly comprised of seafood (seal fat, fish, etc.) which is high in omega-3 fatty acids. You might conclude that Eskimos have good genetics and not prone to heart disease. But, when on a typical North American style diets their risk of heart disease is about the same as the average North American. It is believed that the key difference is the high consumption of seafood and the corresponding high level of omega-3 polyunsaturated fat in their diet.
Fish Oils & Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Fish oils are excellent sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids in turn are important components of cell membranes and play a vital role in overall health. Fish oils have demonstrable benefits in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease; they reduce blood pressure and triglycerides, modify platelet aggregation, and minimize inflammatory responses. There is anecdotal evidence that fish oils (omega-3 fatty acids) may be beneficial in the treatment of migraine headaches, asthma, and psoriasis.
Fish oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids including the most beneficial long chain Omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA -Eicosapentaenoic Acid and DHA docosahexaenoic acid.
Typical Diet Low in Omega-3 and High in Omega-6.
Recent research suggests that livestock fed on grain, produce meat with a poor Omega-6 to Omega-3 fat profile. It theorized that our modern diets which are grain based, is at least in part responsible for many of today’s chronic diseases.
High carbohydrate diets due to their high grain and plant content will ultimately be low in Omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are more prominent in meat from wild game, free range beef and poultry.
“In man and intensively reared animals it appears that diets have become unbalanced in terms of the make-up of fat – particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids. The content of omega-3 fatty acids has declined and omega-6 fatty acids increased.” In fact, experiments are ongoing feeding poultry Fish Oil and Fish meal to improve the meats Omega-3 – Omega-6 fatty acid profile.
More complex than Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acid Ratio
For sure, the issue is more complex than the Omega-3, Omega-6 Ratio. Other factors such as transfatty acids, lack of exercise, poor genetics, stress and many other factors. But, what does seem clear is that increasing the omega-3 fatty acids in you diet either by eating fish or by supplementation is beneficial to your health.
