What is lutein?

Lutein is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. It is increasingly recognized as a key factor in maintaining the health of the macula, an area in the back of the eye's retina that creates the sharpest vision. Free radical damage from sunlight and other environmental factors generally results in the onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration .

How does Lutein work to prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Some of the most valuable antioxidant protection against macular degeneration is supplied by carotenoids which help neutralize the free radicals that can damage the retina. Two carotenoids in particular, lutein and zeaxanthin, play an important role in macular function by blocking the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. ."Both lutein and zeaxanthin effectively absorb the blue region of the visible spectrum-the most damaging wavelengths of light to which the retina is routinely exposed," reports Paul S. Bernstein, M.D., Ph.D., at the University of Utah's Eye Center.
One important study (Landrum JT et.al.1997) evaluated the use of lutein supplementation for 140 days. Two patients received dietary supplements of 30 mg of lutein daily for 140 days. In both patients, there was an increase in macular pigment optical density. This was felt to correspond to a 30% to 40% reduction in the amount of blue light that would reach the photoreceptors. Theoretically, this reduction in blue light could aid in reducing the oxidative damage that may be occurring in Age-Related Macular Degeneration .
